      Ramparts of the fortress St. Elizabeth, which marked the beginning of Kirovograd (formerly. Yelisavetgrad), located near the present city center. Founded in 1754, the fortress was named after St. Elizabeth, patroness of the Empress Elizabeth. The ramparts were built in the form of a star polygon whose ends are pointed bastions. Elisabeth fortress served as the headquarters of the Russian military command in southern Ukraine, the stronghold of Russian influence in Zaporozhye lands and the center of the fight against haidamak movement.
